A contract with a devil…?

Gabriel Morgan never imagines his eighteenth birthday will end with the doors of his home being kicked in by gun-wielding thugs intent on stealing away his little sister as payment for his estranged father’s gambling debts. Pushed into an impossible corner, Gabriel is on the brink of doing something unspeakable when billionaire business mogul Darrien Stathos steps into the fray and announces a contract that nullifies all other claims—for Gabriel. Only too willing to be the sacrificial martyr to save his family, the cost of surrendering himself to Darrien, however, may be more than Gabriel bargains for.

Demon, alien, vampire, or just a plain human monster rumored to be the international crime lord known as Kairos, Gabriel has heard all whispered about this handsome, yet intimidating, savior. Whispers he is starting to fear are true when he witnesses a few disturbing incidents involving Darrien that cannot be rationally explained. Add to that the constant harassment of a couple of FBI agents intent on unearthing damning evidence that will prove that the crime lord, Kairos, is Darrien’s true face, as well as an assassination attempt on Darrien, and Gabriel starts to think that maybe sharing Darrien’s bed is the least daunting thing he will have to face.

Who is Darrien really, and why is he so interested in an ordinary guy like Gabriel, a guy just struggling to help his family make ends meet like millions of others? Gabriel isn’t sure he wants to know the answer, but when has the universe ever given him anything other than the finger?

My Review
I wanted to read this title because I like things related to the paranormal and MM romances. Besides, when you see a title like "Lord of Time" it intrigues you even more and makes you think of "Doctor Who". Here, we are far from this universe.
I enjoyed this book for about forty percent. Afterwards, I felt like I was reading a paranormal-infused parallel universe class plus a few sex scenes posed there. It did not alleviate my growing boredom.
I still forced myself to finish the book to see if the tone would change, but no.
At the beginning, the characters interested me but the more I discovered them, the less I liked them except two or three. Darrien, I easily understood his reactions as Gabriel made me wondering over some of his decisions. Especially the one involving his friends.
I do not intend to continue this series. Scientific explanations are too long and boring. Romance almost non-existent. The ending didn't surprise me at all because I was expecting something like that.
I did not know the author who uses two pen names. I'm still going to try one of her other books under her other name to see if her style is more fluid and pleasant.
Rating : 6/10

I would like to thanks C.G. Rayne and Booksprout for the ARC.

Ada Austen was born a Jersey Girl. She has lived in Monmouth County, NJ beach towns from Atlantic Highlands to Belmar. She currently lives in a small coastal city on the New Jersey shore called Asbury Park, and never plans to leave. She walks daily at the ocean, collecting shells, beachglass and stories.

Ada's first novel, Helping Each Other, was published in October 2016. It is no longer in print, but she plans to release a revised edition someday. Her second novel, Better Late Than Never, is targeted for October 2020 release. She's now working on her third novel, Boardwalk Ice which is set in Asbury Park. She's targeting a 2021 release.

Excerpt 1
She needed coffee. She needed coffee bad. The sun was pouring into the windows, way too bright and cheerful. Carrie heard no sound of Manny, so she put on a robe and crept into the kitchen, as quiet as possible. She could see the couch from her little kitchen. She tried hard not to stare, but the sight of his bare chest above the sheet, his long black hair hanging down across it, made her gasp. It was just a tiny gasp. She hoped he hadn’t heard it. That chest! She turned around and measured the coffee grounds, her hands shaking slightly. There were tattoos on that chest she had never seen. She turned around and took another peek. He was stirring. She looked away again, back to the coffee. Oh, that chest! It needed careful study. There was just so much more of him now. He was so filled out, so much a man. That chest needed to be above her while she studied it. She wanted to feel him against her. She would press her face above his heart.

His hands on her shoulders made her jump and cry out.

He laughed. “Sorry,” he said, letting go as she spun around. “I was just going to say good morning.”

He stopped smiling when he saw her face. She knew she was staring. She knew she was probably, as Emily would put it, pathetic looking, staring at that broad chest, so close to her, she could smell his scent. Pathetic in her flimsy, old ragged torn lace robe, full of holes. Pathetic, because she knew he could see her nipples beneath the lace. Pathetic because she could not stop her hand from reaching out to trace the lines of his bare tats. His skin was hot. So hot, so warm from sleep.

Excerpt 2
He reached out and squeezed her hand firmly.

“It’s okay. I don’t need that. I’m more than thankful for what you’ve given me. Emily’s my everything.”

His touch. His forgiveness. At this moment, she had both. She stared at his hand, holding hers.

He let go. He probably thought she wanted that.

He looked lonely, sitting there by himself, on the other side of the table. She didn’t want him to be lonely. At least she had given him Emily. Emily could hug him. She could hug Emily and Emily could hug him.

“Emily’s my everything, too,” she said.

She probably looked as lonely as him, sitting on this side of the table. They were like two moons that spun around planet Emily. Two moons, spinning, passing each other, once or twice a day. It felt both beautiful and unbearable as he stared at her and she stared back.

Excerpt 3
“What are we even doing here together?” said Emily. “We have nothing in common.”

“Let’s make this an experiment, to test that, okay?” said Carrie. “Or at least an experiment to see how long we can go without fighting?”

They were in a Mall where Emily had agreed Carrie could take her to buy clothes for the new school year. They turned a corner and Emily lingered, looking into the window.

“I love the clothes in this store,” said Emily, wistfully.

“So do I,” said Carrie.

The clothes were of high quality and had a unique style, but they were so pricey.

“Yeah,” Emily said quietly.

“We could go in and look, Em. You like them. I like them.”

“I don’t want to go in with you. Shopping with my mom?” Emily looked around as if checking if anyone she knew was nearby.

“We can act like we’re not together.” Liking this store was something they had in common. It seemed important to act on that.

“No. I’d rather not. You’re not going to buy me anything in there. Why torture myself, looking at things I want that I can’t have?” Emily began walking away.

“Wait! What if I promise you that I’ll buy you something?”

“And you’ll buy something for yourself, too?”

“Do you think I need something?” That was sweet, Emily looking out for her.

“Yes! Something made in this century would be a good look on you, for a change.”

It was not the right time to explain vintage versus vintage-style or the merits of quality craftsmanship of earlier times.

“Let’s do it, then!” said Carrie.

Emily’s face lit up, which made Carrie happy.

“Really!” It would be fun for both of them.

“But Mom, promise me you’re not going to argue about what I choose? That would ruin it, if we ended up killing each other over what I can wear.”

“Right. We must avoid killing each other. Let’s meet at the register then.  But promise me it won’t be too expensive, okay? And one item, not a wardrobe?”

“It’s a deal.”

They giggled together and entered the store, each walking to opposite walls.

Carrie took her time, touching the fabrics, marveling at the embroidery and hand-sewn embellishments as she wandered the shop, gathering items that particularly called to her.
She tried on several dresses. There was one that was a perfect fit. It was more trendy than she normally wore, but she loved the way it fit and made her feel. Plus, working pockets! Well, of course, this was the one.

She saw Emily near the register.

“I’m ready,” she said to her, walking up.

“Me too,” said Em. “Oh my god! What are you doing, Mom?”

“What are you yelling at me for?”

Emily held her dress out for Carrie to see. It was the same dress as Carrie’s.

“No way!”

“You followed me!” yelled Emily.

“I didn’t follow you! I wouldn’t do that. I love this dress. But it’s okay. You get it. I’ll find something else.”

“Ew, no! I’m not wearing a dress my mother would wear. You get it.”

Carrie hesitated. “Well, wait. I don’t know if I want it now. I don’t want to be dressing like a teenager.”

Emily giggled, then laughed. Carrie laughed, too. The customers in line ahead of them and the cashier laughed with them. Without a word, together, they put the dresses back on the rack and left the store, still laughing.

“How did that happen? You hardly ever wear dresses,” said Carrie.

“The pockets,” said Emily.

“Of course. Hey, let’s go for ice cream,” said Carrie.

“Okay, but no sharing! Even if we both want the same thing.”

“No problem,” said Carrie.

Hunting Haven by Charlee Garden

I noticed the screenless window that was left open above her sink almost immediately. Peering through the window, I tried to see if there was a discarded screen or if she just didn’t have one to begin with. My stomach clenched as I spotted nail marks on the outside of the window sill. The lock was still intact, but the vamp had clearly pried it open which made me think that the fucker was old. A newly changed bloodsucker would have pushed the window up without a trace. It was always the really old leeches that didn’t have a grasp on how modern designs worked and left traces behind.

“Looking for something?” Haven asked from behind me.

I turned around to face her, ignoring her question. “You always leave your window open when you go to work?” She leaned casually against the door frame. Her tight jeans and long legs looked entirely too appealing. I forced my gaze back to her face in time to notice her confused frown.

Blood Claimed by Heather MacKinnon

I climbed out of the car and followed him over to a stairwell in the corner. He eyed me warily before speaking. “I’m on the top floor.”

I shrugged. “Okay. Isn’t there an elevator?”

He winced. “I can’t risk it right now. We have to take the stairs.”

I glanced up, getting dizzy as I tried to count the amount of flights I’d have to climb.

“I can carry you, if you want,” he offered quietly.

I turned to find him, fists clenched at his sides, but his eyes wide open for me. I shrugged. “I won’t be too heavy for you?”

He snorted. “No. You weigh next to nothing.”

I rolled my eyes. “I wouldn’t say I weigh next to nothing.”

“You’re hardly even full grown.”

My jaw fell open as I reached out and slapped him in the arm. It made so much sense now why it felt like I was hitting granite instead of flesh. “Sorry I’m not a hulking giant like you.”

He sniffed and, in a movement too quick for me to follow, he pulled me into his arms and began running up the stairs. “I do not hulk.”

“Oh my God, yes you do. You hulk all over the place. You probably can’t even help yourself.”

He gave me an unimpressed look as he continued to practically fly up the stairs.

Blood Thorn by A.S. Green

Someone was watching. This wasn’t totally unusual for Ainsley Morris. Her job, after all, required her to wear an eighteenth-century tartan dress that laced so tightly, her breasts looked like they were going to explode. On top of that, her mane of long red curls was equally outrageous. (She’d never been the perfectly coiffed Cinderella at the ball. More like a curvier version of that crazy little redheaded chick from Brave.) But today Ainsley was getting a different kind of attention. Different, even for the Renaissance fair.

Yes, people always looked and smiled at her, but Ainsley was just one small part of the larger spectacle. She’d never inspired such prolonged, individualized scrutiny. Seriously, if whoever was staring at her wanted a peep show, most of her neighboring vendors showed more cleavage than she did. And that included Kenneth.

Ainsley casually looked down to check for any wardrobe malfunctions. Maybe she’d slipped a nip and hadn’t noticed. But nope. Nothing too scandalous there.

Still… Someone was definitely watching her. She could feel it like a sixth sense, an itch between her shoulder blades.

She scanned the evening crowd, sifting through the paunchy men with their Minnesota Vikings T-shirts, college kids in their Saint-Whatever sweatshirts, and Girl Scout leader moms with gaggles of tired kids in their wakes. Nothing seemed out of the norm, but there it was again—heated, intense, the itch turning into a burn.

She tried to diffuse her unease by straightening the vials of perfumes, herbal remedies, and floral-scented notepads on her shelves. Wafts of rose water, peppermint, and lavender filled her nose. She’d first applied to work at the fair when she was eighteen, hoping to get cast as a villager. But when she’d mentioned she was going to study botany in college and showed them some of the essential oils she’d made from plants in her own garden, she was given Ye Olde Apothecary booth and told she could supplement the wares with creations of her own, taking a higher commission for those, of course.

That was three years ago, and now she had a sizable collection of her own home remedies for sale—peppermint oil for headaches; palmarosa and frankincense for wrinkles; chamomile for muscle aches. Not that she was getting rich off it. Most people spent their money on beer and turkey legs, or on some of the “sexier” vendors—like her friend Julia who did tarot and palm reading, or even Kenneth in the neighboring booth who tooled leather belts and vests, mostly for motorcycle folks and dominatrixes.

So much for trying to distract herself. The weighty gaze was still there, making her hand shake so much she toppled three bottles.

Stupid. She had to be imagining it. Who would want to watch her when there was so much else going on? Within thirty feet of her booth she could spot two fire jugglers and three scantily clad village harlots.

But she couldn’t fully convince herself. The man’s energy—yes, she was quite certain it was a man—was heavy, hungry even. His intensity followed her every movement, burning into her skin as she re-arranged the tiny vials and tried to look busy.

A welcomed breeze lifted strands of her hair, tickling her bare arms and raising goosebumps. Her nipples went hard as cherry pits under the thin chemise.

The man’s attention made her feel awkward and virginal, which was exactly what she was. Ainsley knew what kind of damage a man could do. She’d seen it first hand, and that’s why she swore she’d never flirt with her own disaster. Besides, she preferred the botany lab to Friday night keggers and hookups, and she could take care of her own…um…physical needs just fine, thank you very much.

Dependable, trust-worthy, honest men were about as real as the love potions she hawked to lure in buyers.

“How’s it goin’, Ainsley?” asked a throaty feminine voice.

Ainsley’s head jerked up, thankful for the diversion. The tightness in her chest eased at the sight of Julia, who had a colorful head scarf tied around her long, Afro blowout. Her neck was draped in a half dozen gold bangles, and her turquoise eyes—courtesy of colored contacts—were mesmerizing. She looked every bit the mystic, which was why, when Julia told your fortune, you bet you believed it. The girl made bank.

“What’s up, Jules?”

“All my male customers,” Julia teased. “I swear something’s in the air today. One guy seriously bent over and licked my hand when I was reading his palm.”

“Oh my god. Ew.”

“I should have kicked him under the table. How have sales been for you?”

“Got enough in commissions for a few drinks at an overpriced bar,” Ainsley said, touching the leather satchel she wore around her waist.

“Oooo. Got big plans tonight?”

“For once. Yeah. It’s my best friend’s bachelorette party, and I,” Ainsley paused for dramatic effect, “am finally twenty-one.”

“That’s right!” Julia exclaimed, her necklaces jingling. “Happy birthday!”

There was a high-pitched laugh from the far side of Ainsley’s booth, and they both looked. A group of middle schoolers were uncorking the sample bottles and dabbing them on each other’s necks.

Ainsley knew they wouldn’t be buying anything. They’d obviously spent whatever money their parents had given them on charcoal caricature drawings and those stupid floral crowns with the streamers. Any minute now…yep. Great. They’d gone and spilled the eucalyptus. A whiff of mint and menthol hit the air.

“I hate middle schoolers,” Ainsley muttered with a sigh. “I hate that they think they’re cooler than me. Age should give me the upper hand.”

“You’re plenty cool,” Julia said reassuringly.

“Really? I’m a Renaissance cos-player whose career ambition is to someday be named a Distinguished Fellow of the Botanical Society of America."

“Uh-huh,” Julia said, her expression flattening. “I don’t know anything about that but—”

“I skipped out on a spring break trip with my friends to work on a research project in the botany lab.”

“My best friend calls it the lobotomy lab, and I can’t tell if she’s kidding or not.”

“Okay. So maybe not super cool, but that’s no way to feel when you’re about to hit the town with your girls. Look at me.” Julia gestured at her necklaces. “What you need is a little bling to brighten your mood.”

Julia glanced around. When her gaze landed on something to her left, she stifled a laugh. Ainsley followed her gaze and saw that one of the middle schoolers had accidentally left her floral crown behind. The flowers were sad and limp from a full day in the sun.

“Julia, no.”

Julia’s smile widened. She grabbed the wilted wreath and placed it on Ainsley’s head. “Yasss, queen!”

Ainsley’s eyes shifted to the crowd, still feeling the elusive man’s heated stare. In fact, her whole body felt hot. There was a burning sensation in her stomach that rose to her chest and shot down her arms, making her fingers tingle.

When she looked back, she was surprised to see that Julia’s jaw had gone slack, but her eyebrows had hit her hairline. “Julia?”

“Whoa. Ainsley. Go look at yourself.”

Confused, Ainsley left her booth and stepped in front of Kenneth’s full-length mirror. Same exploding cleavage, same outrageous hair, but the floral crown, it had…bloomed? The sad little carnations had nearly tripled in size. “What the heck?”

Her neck prickled. Was she imagining things, or had the stranger’s gaze just gone from heated to electric? She spun around, looking for the source, and thought she saw a blur of color ducking behind the blacksmith stall.

Julia jumped back. “What’s wrong?”

“I just felt… I don’t know… Maybe I’m going crazy.”

Chapter continues…

His Soul to Keep by Stella Williams

Clouds obscured the moon and stars in a pitch-black sky.

Where the hell is he? “Branson!”

There was no answer. Soul stumbled through the barbed vines that littered her path. Thorns caught the thin white sheet she’d fashioned into a dress, leaving streaks of blood where they tore into her ankles.

“Branson! Answer me, you asshole!”

This time her calls were answered by the sound of flapping wings before a small, dark figure swooped low, almost hitting her head. The small gust of wind from its wings barely moving her gelled beehive fro. She swiped her hand over her face, not caring she smeared the green and grey zombie makeup she’d carefully applied earlier.

She stopped in the middle of what used to be a blooming garden, now overgrown and filled with dead and decaying foliage. Stone statues and fountains loomed in every direction. Just visible enough to play tricks on her mind. A feral growl broke the relative silence of the night, sending her heart racing. The growling got closer, but as she whipped around expecting to see an animal, all she saw was more shadows—this time running swiftly through the overgrown brush.

This is the last time I fall for his stupid jokes.

“I’m going home! I’m not playing no stupid games.”

She expected Branson to emerge from the darkness, or maybe for him to laugh and give away his position. Branson loved to play jokes on her. He was supposed to be taking her to one of his college parties so she would know what it was like before she graduated high school that year. Instead, he and his friends had stopped here at the old Foster Plantation on the outskirts of Foster, their small town. The creepiest house anyone had ever known.

Everything from ghost sightings to demonic possessions and monster-sized animals was tied to this place. Fitting to the atrocities served by its previous slaveholding owners. Not that the modern generation of Fosters was any less racist. Just now, their fortune was spent, and their ancestral home abandoned to the fitting ruin it should be. Most people with any sense steered clear of the place, especially on Halloween. The night when all manner of spirits roamed the earth.

Don’t go playing with spirits, child. You don’t know what’s lurking on Old Hallows’ Eve.

Grandma Ronnie’s words played on a loop in Soul’s head as she desperately fought the fear threatening to paralyze her. Soul would never have gotten out of the car if Branson hadn’t agreed to stay by her side. Of course, he and his friends, Blake and Wayne, had taken off running in all different directions as soon as they had the chance. Leaving Soul vulnerable and alone among the spirits of the dead.

Branson thought it was a joke when Soul said she could feel spirits. It wasn’t. It was part of her family legacy. Grandma Ronnie was known for her psychic ability around town, even if she tried to downplay it. Unfortunately, Soul was following suit in that regard. Even now, she could feel the brush of tormented souls along her skin, hear their screams like wounded animals in the distance. Barely a whisper, but audible all the same.

Taking a deep breath, she clenched her hands tighter. Her fingernails bit into the palm of her hands, bringing her thoughts back to the present. The feral growling started again, farther away this time, but still too close for comfort.

“Branson, when I find you, I’m going to kill you!”

The words echoed in the night. Giving up on trying to reason with the boys, Soul made her way back to the car. At least there, she would have some protection against anything coming her way. Maybe someone passing by would give her a ride home. The wild animals had enough sense to stay away from the road, even when the road remained mostly deserted. The local hunters had made sure of that. The closer she got to the car, the farther away the growling became. She relaxed a little, focusing on her anger at Branson for taking this joke of his too far. Soul could just barely make out the silhouette of Branson’s old busted Camaro. The driver’s door was wide open, but none of the boys were in sight. She turned around, searching for any sign of them. Branson would never be so careless with his precious vehicle.

“Branson! This is too far!”

There was a rustling behind her, heavy footfalls getting closer to her position. The progress she made in calming herself down was now undone. She wrapped her arms tight around herself, rubbing her arms to fight off the chills racking her body. The spirits assailed her.

She took off for the car. She could feel the animal on her heels but refused to look back. Looking back would only slow her down. The vehicle was in sight, if she could just make it there, she would be safe. Soul never made it to the car. Something, or someone, struck a painful blow to the back of her head, rendering her unconscious.

She spent her life running from them. Now she’s going to school with them.

For as long as she could remember, Kennedy’s mother had called her a demon, but she’d never believed her; her mother was ill. And then the Archangel Gabriel appeared trying to kill her. When divine intervention steps in, Kennedy finds herself whisked away to Greenwood Preparatory University.

Hellfire Academy, as the students call it, is home to nephilim like her. To the outside world it’s an exclusive college. To some of the student body, it’s a training academy—and one of the professors is Gabriel. Kennedy has the year to prove that she can stay out of trouble, which would be easy to do if she wasn't getting distracted by an archangel.

When Kennedy’s roommate has a vision that the college will be attacked, it’s up to Kennedy to stop that from happening. Only it’s hard to know who to trust when you’re the one everyone thinks is evil.

My Review
It was the cover that caught my eye when I was looking at the available ARCs. So I wanted to know more and I went to read the synopsis which totally intrigued me.
Since "Vampire Academy", I have not read anything with this term (Academy) in the title while there is a lot of books at the moment except that it's mostly Reverse Harem. Here it's not the case and I say good because we focus more on some highly interesting characters.
We discover a world where angels exist. They are one of the people I like to see in paranormal romances so it's cheerfully that I started reading this title.
From the first pages, I identified myself with Kennedy when we don't have much in common. I enjoyed following her in her rediscovery of the world and who she is after having been confronted with stressful events. I liked the relationship with Gabriel. We can feel the growing tension.
The author's pen is fluid. I was caught up in the story from the start and almost read it all at once. I was angry when someone came to disturb me for lunch. Once the meal is eaten, I plunged back into it until the end.
I discovered the author thanks to this title and I am delighted. To better understand the universe, I might read the Angel series. What is clear is that the book two is already on my wishlist.

Killian walked into my new voodoo shop late one night with an urgent request – he needed me to heal his friend. Only I know absolutely nothing about voodoo, or healing. I’m just trying to start a new life with what little family I have left after my dream of becoming a star on Broadway went up in flames.

At first glance, he was an average looking guy with a European flair. Nothing outside the ordinary in the city of New Orleans. But despite his nerdy-boy attire, Killian was most definitely all man. And as his black eyes made their way up my body to my face, the look reflected within them wasn’t the least bit tame.

More like predatory…

I expected her to cast me down the moment I walked through her door. But I had no choice. One of my own was dying from a witch’s curse, and only another witch could undo the spell. However, Lizzy was not what I’d expected to find. Stunned by her beauty and overwhelmed by her scent, I burned with thirst until the blood raced through my veins and my body tightened with need.

But with one taste, she calmed the beast within me as the truth flooded my wicked soul. The witch is MINE. She is the pulse that feeds my immortal life and the bearer of my death. Taking Lizzy as my mate will bring about the end of my coven’s uneasy truce with the witches.

Leaving her will mean my demise…

My name is Killian Rice, and I am a vampire. Come Into The Dark with this new series by L.E. Wilson, and enter her Deathless Night. A world of immortals with only one weakness: The witches who can destroy us…

My Review
Being a fan of vampires and paranormal romance, I thought to myself that I absolutely had to read this title after reading its synopsis. The only negative point being the length of the synopsis.
The created universe revolves around vampires and witches and the story takes place in New Orleans. We discover several characters that we appreciate more or less.
Killian is the typical alpha male who is used to being obeyed and getting what he wants. At times he annoyed me but what do you expect, he's a vampire.
Lizzy will destabilize him but it works both ways. Everything she finds disturbs her and that's normal. I won't jump for joy either.
My reading was enjoyable although I wasn't as excited about the story as I expected. My interest was more on a secondary character. Hope it will be different when her tome arrives.
I discovered the pen of L.E. Wilson and that this series is part of the same universe as "Deathless Night" which I intend to read since the first volume is already in my to read list.
The second book in the series will focus on Kenya, which I really appreciate. I noted it in my wishlist and I intend to not miss it.

L.E. Wilson writes Paranormal Romance starring intense alpha males and the women who are fearless enough to tame them -- for the most part anyway. Wink In her novels you'll find smoking hot scenes, a touch of suspense, some humor, a bit of gore, and multifaceted characters, all working together to combine her lifelong obsession with the paranormal and her love of romance.

Her writing career came about the usual way: on a dare from her loving husband. Little did she know just one casual suggestion would open a box of worms (or words as the case may be) that would forever change her life.

Lattes and music are a necessary part of her writing process, and sometimes you'll find her typing away at her favorite Starbucks. She walks two miles to get there, to make up for all of those coffees.

A man stood just inside the door, looking around my store with an amused expression on his face. At first glance, he wasn't anything special to look at. About five foot eleven if the ruler on the door frame was correct, of average build, with pale skin, short, sandy brown hair and a classically handsome face that hadn't seen a razor in a day or so. As I ran my eyes over his suspiciously dry clothes, I noticed he had what I would consider a bit of a European look to him. His dark jeans were fitted to his lean, muscular legs, and he wore a hip-length black sweater with a big collar open over a nondescript, dark green shirt. All he needed was a pair of glasses with thick frames to complete the look he seemed to be going for.

However, despite his nerdy-boy attire, the man standing in my shop was most definitely not a boy. And the look in his black eyes, once they made their way back up to my face, was not in the least bit nerdy.

More like predatory.

My lungs began to ache from lack of air, and I sucked in a quick breath through my nose.

Oh, my God. What was that?

The best cologne I'd ever smelled invaded my sinuses, overriding even the spiciness of the incense, and for a brief moment I closed my eyes as desire wound its way through my body, the sudden ache in my womb sharp and heavy.

A discreet cough brought me crashing back to where I was. Heat crept up my chest to fan out across my neck and face as I remembered myself, and I was self-consciously aware I must look as red as the curtain behind me.

The man smiled a secret smile, as though he knew exactly what was going on inside my body. Could see the carnal images running through my head.

Setting the bag on the counter, I pulled myself together and forced a professional tone to my voice. I think I may have even succeeded once I was finally able to get past the first few words. "I'm sorry, but the shop is closed for the night. However, we open tomorrow at ten." I smiled as nonchalantly as I could manage. "I hope you'll be able make it back then."

Really, I secretly hoped he was just one of the many tourists and would be heading back out of town tomorrow. There was something about this guy that was making me distinctly uncomfortable. Potential customer or not.

Then he spoke for the first time, the musical cadence of his voice sliding over me like the soft notes of some cool Jazz. "Are you the owner of this..." He glanced around. "Shop? Did you call it?" There was a slight lilt to his speech. Irish, maybe? His "are" sounded more like "a-our". "Did you" more like "didja." Yet he spoke so low, his deep voice so soothing, almost like a purr—or maybe a growl—that it was hard to catch if you weren't paying attention.

"Yes. Is there something I can help you with?" Maybe he wasn't a normal customer. Maybe he was here to try to sell me something, and that's why I was getting such a weird vibe. That, and the fact that he'd somehow gotten in through a locked door.

Reading my mind again, he smiled and gestured toward the door. "Forgive me for coming in after hours. The door was unlocked."

I flicked my eyes over to the door and then back to him. Like hell it was.

He cocked his head to the side. "Are you a new here? I haven't seen you around before."

"New Orleans is a crowded city."

"That it is, but mostly full of tourists. Us locals usually stick together."

Did they? "I'm the new owner. My name is Lizzy Smith. How can I help you?" I repeated.

"Smith?" He appeared put off by my name.

I dropped all pretenses of being pleasant and frowned instead. "Yes. Smith. It was the best I could do on short notice." I didn't know what made that bit of truth come out. "Is there something I can help you with?" I repeated.

The lines of concern on his forehead disappeared as he strolled a few steps further inside the store, and closer to me. "Actually, I was looking for someone, but that's not the correct name. Is there a better one you can think of, by chance?"

He was smirking at me. The bastard.

As casually as I could, I stepped back until I was standing at the end of the counter, nearer the pepper spray I always kept within easy reach, because I couldn't afford the gun I wanted yet. "And you are?"

I'd blinked, and he was suddenly standing directly in front of me, one hand wrapped around my upper arm. He'd moved so fast, it had taken my brain a few seconds to catch up with what my eyes had just seen. Or not seen, as it were. My heart thumped hard, once, and then it began to race, making me lightheaded. He stood so close, his make-me-want-to-rip-off-my-panties scent teasing my nose, it took another moment for me to be able to form a coherent thought. Unlike a normal cologne, whatever he was wearing didn't get stronger with his near proximity, but mellowed to a mere tease of the scent. It drew me in to him without my realizing it, and I had the sudden urge to bury my face in his chest.

Gradually, I realized my hands were pressed flat against said chest. But whether to push him away or draw him closer, I couldn't have said.

Drawn by the soothing allure of his voice, I lifted my chin until my eyes met his. Like his scent, his average good looks became devastating up close and personal. Beneath my hands, his chest was warm. So very, very warm. My head swam and my heart continued its erratic beat as I drowned in the dark pools of his eyes.

My entire body ached to be closer to him.

The material of my jeans was all at once rough and irritating against my thighs as my blood raced to the surface, sensitizing my skin. My soft shirt prickly as hell. I had the sudden urge to offer myself to him. Anything he needed. Anything he wanted. If he would just get me out of these irritating clothes.

Black eyes bored into mine, and I’d swear they could see every dirty stain on my soul.

"I need your help."

I struggled against the urge to obey his every wish. "But you just said I had the wrong name." Though I felt my lips and tongue form the words, they came to my own ears as though through a vast void.
"The name doesn't matter. You're the person I'm looking for. You have to be. Because I don't have any other options."

Warning bells clanged loudly in my head, but I couldn't piece anything together enough so that it made sense. "What's your name?" I asked him through a fog.

He touched my cheek with the fingertips of his free hand, his dark eyes roaming across my features as they followed the trail they made. "My name is Killian. And you are not what I expected."

Alien Castaways
Book 1 : Chameleon

Author : Cara Bristol

Number of pages : 179

Publication date : September 16th 2020

Collection : Intergalactic Dating Agency #83

Publisher : Independently Published

When you wish upon a falling star, er, UFO…

Young widow Kevanne Girardi catches sight of a meteorite streaking across the sky and wishes for a good handyman to help make her rundown lavender farm a big success. Instead, she gets a shapeshifting alien who apparently has never seen a leaky faucet before. But his loving and noble spirit make him just the man to fix her wounded heart. He hasn’t promised her forever, but a girl can hope, can’t she? Maybe she’ll make another wish…

When his ship tumbles out of the sky and lands on Earth, Chameleon never expects to fall for a human woman. Unfortunately, he can’t stay. He made a mistake that led to the devastation of an entire planet, and now the survivors are depending on him to get them to safety. He must repair his ship and leave before the Xeno Consortium finds him and Earth becomes endangered, too. But oh, he wishes he could stay with Kevanne forever…

Can a twist of fate make their wishes come true?

My Review
I have a little passion for romances involving aliens but I rarely find books that live up to my expectations. Mostly books in French. I am therefore delighted to be able to read in English and to discover the pen of new authors like Cara Bristol.
I saw this title on Booksprout and immediately wanted to read it. This is how I learned about the large "Intergalactic Dating Agency" collection which involves several authors.
The story begins in another arm of the universe where I have no desire to set foot and features several characters who will each have their story in their future books.
Chameleon made me think of the movie "Avatar" in certain aspects of his appearance but the resemblance ends there. Kevanne has a cheerful less life past but she made me laugh by some of her reactions.
The characters are interesting to discover and to follow. Even if we have an idea of the ending of the story, what happens between the beginning and the end is not predictable.
The last page arrives faster than I expected because I would have liked to know more. I hope that we will be entitled to some information in book two.
I plan to read the next book because "Wingman" has wings. Logic considering the name.

Her only hope of paying past due bills is to win the catering bid for the town’s upcoming Harvest Happening festival. Otherwise, it’ll be lights out for Mount Desserts by Christmas.

Widower Jeff Perry is moving with his twelve-year-old daughter, Candy, from Manhattan to Maine with one goal: starting over. When sparks fly between Jeff and Eve as the town readies for the annual harvest festival, Candy wishes she had a love potion to help her dad fall in love again.

Will Eve be able to save Mount Desserts—and open her heart to Jeff—by the most bewitching night of the year? It’ll take a lot of love, a little bit of luck … and just a pinch of magic.

My Review
It was the title that initially intrigued me. After reading the synopsis, I wanted to read this story.
The story takes place in a small town in Maine, Bar Harbor, and revolves primarily around the Mount Dessert bakery. I have had my mouth watering more than once.
The narration is made from three different points of view by the most important characters: Eve, Jeff and Candace. The characters are endearing and for the first time I liked them all. I admit that Doris is a bit annoying. Everyone faces challenges but it's by working together that things move forward.
The story is fluid and the pages flow quite easily. It took me a few days to finish it between my shifts. I found only two words that I didn't understand (I'm French) but it help me to learn more English words.
I am delighted to discover Lindy Miller's pen with a great story that goes well with the season. It's heart touching with a pinch of magic and pleasant to read. I will follow her future publications and I'm waiting for the next book in the series.

Fae freak. Killer. Abomination.
I’ve been accused of terrible crimes.
And I’m far from innocent.

My uncontrollable powers earned me a cell in Wayward Fae Penitentiary where the inmates have it out for me and the guards turn a blind eye to every bit of violence. I’m here for one reason only, and that’s to assassinate the ruthless unseelie prince.

Viktor claims he’s going to break me, make me wish I never set foot in his prison. If that were true, why does he keep saving me from the dangerous alpha shifter salivating for my blood?

W.F.P. is not your average lockup. The prince has more authority than the warden, creatures roam the halls at night, and a war between unseelies and shifters is brewing.

When I’m viciously attacked, Viktor brings me back from the brink of death, but no one could have foreseen the consequences. How could I go through with my mission now?

If I kill him, I’ll become the monster everyone thinks I am.

If I don’t, innocent blood will spill.

My Review
It is the beautiful cover that made me want to discover this title. The summary confirmed my choice.
The universe is very interesting with a mix of fae, shifters, elves and daemons. Something to delight paranormal and fantasy fans.
The characters are mostly pleasant, some irritating: we need to have some to hate. I immediately loved Sloane and then Vik. Each of their confrontations is delightful, it blows hot and cold.
The story leads us to make discoveries about the world that Sloane discovered as well as about different characters.
If my reading had to be described in one word: wow! I hung from start to finish. There is action, almost no downtime and no risk of getting bored. It's an addictive reading and I fell in love with the characters and the author's pen.
I will of course read the next book. December seems far away to me, but it's always better than waiting a year or two, as it's the case for some series published in France.
I didn't know J.N. Colon but I'm going to take a closer look at her other titles.

...Even if it means certain death.

My Review
It was first the cover that attracted me to this title. The woman on it is Latin so that changes nicely. I like diversity because it is diversity that makes the world nicer. The summary convinced me to read this first book.
The universe created by the author is well constructed and coherent for what I could see. Exactly in my favorite genre with novelty on the mythological side. I am waiting to discover more to have a better view.
If the beginning seemed a bit chaotic to me, I was quickly drawn into the story which is more like a survival road trip.
The narration is being carried out by several characters, it is good that the author has thought of notifying us who it is at the beginning of each chapter. I find it helpful to have different points of view.
The characters are all very interesting even if I have a lot of trouble with Cruz. Many times he makes you want to kill him in his sleep. I much prefer to follow the evolution between Santos and Adelita.
The ending is literally grrr. You clearly want to know the rest given the way it ends. What I want and will do when it will be published.
My reading was pleasant and the author's pen fluid. I want strongly the continuation.
I didn't know Mary E. Twomey before reading this title, but being French, I discover English-writing authors almost every week.
