Excerpt
“Fay, stop it” He let out with a sigh of weariness, reaching for me from across the table but I was out of reach. He rested his slander, delicate hand on the table. His fingers were long and his skin paled, unmarred by any blemish. It was hard to imagine these hands in the heat of passion fucking a woman as powerfully as he said.

I looked up and met his hypnotic eyes, looking at me with such wonder and a hint of something I couldn’t really decipher.

“I have time for you, always” He added with a small smile.

“Why?

“Because it’s you.” He replied so softly that it thawed a little of my irritation.

“You have to stop being mean.” I chided. “This is not okay,”

“But she was -”

I shook my head. “It doesn't matter, she wanted to try her luck so what? It may not have been the most appropriate place but she didn’t do anything wrong and it didn’t warrant your reaction.”

“If you dislike me so much, why are you even bothering with me?” he asked coldly and even if his face looked hard, I didn’t miss the glass of hurt in his eyes.

“I don’t...dislike you.” I replied tentatively. It was true though, I didn’t. I let out a startled laugh. “God help me. I think I even like you.”

He arched his eyebrows, and I saw his tensed shoulder relax under his dressed shirt.

“I liked the caring, nice Gareth I see when you’re with me. But, I have a hard time with this version of Gareth - the dismissive, mean Gareth.” I cocked my head to the side. “I don’t like him very much and I have a hard time reconciling both sides of you.” I admitted truthfully.

He took a deep breath. “That’s fair. Please, stay.” And I could see yet again he was not the kind of man to ask for anything. He was demanding and this simple request mollified me a little more.

When Satan, aka Wyatt Winters, moves to town, I do my best to be welcoming. After all, I’m the owner of the historic restaurant and bar that he keeps showing up at, despite criticizing nearly everything about it. Deep breath. I might’ve lost my cool and made a rude gesture in his direction. And told him off. How was I to know he was considering investing in my place?

Did I mention I’m in debt up to my eyeballs and every bank has turned me down?

Excerpt
Sydney

Wyatt catches my eye. “Appetizers are good.”

Pleased that he finally said something positive about my place, I close the distance, stopping at his table. “Glad you’re enjoying them.”

He leans back in his chair. “Have you ever thought of upgrading the dinner menu?”

My temper flares, but I manage to keep a civil tone. “No. Locals love it.”

“Not saying it’s bad, just unoriginal. I mean, every meal comes with either French fries or baked potato. A new chef might bring some life to the place. Isn’t that what tonight’s fundraiser’s all about? Keeping this place open?” He taps the table. “With the right management, a better chef, this place has potential.”

I manage this place, and the chef is a family friend. I bare my teeth. “Seems you know a lot about the restaurant business.”

“Not at all. I just appreciate a good one.”

I jam my hands on my hips and glare at him. Obviously he thinks we’re a bad one! I’m so furious I can’t even speak.

He cocks his head. “Cindy, are you cross with me?”

“Who the hell do you think you are?” I snap. “Coming in here and insulting my place left and right! If you don’t like it, don’t come back.”

He arches a brow. “Since you own the place, maybe we could talk about some serious improvements. You don’t know what you don’t know, am I right?”

I bristle. “This place was my great-grandfather’s, passed down the generations, and now it’s mine.” I leave out that Drew is the one who actually inherited it and declared it a lost cause because of the debt dragging it down. I took it over rather than let him sell it. “It’s an institution in this town, and we’re doing just fine without your city snark. How dare you walk in here and spew your judgment over all of us!”

He smirks. “I don’t recall spewing.”

My heartbeat roars in my ears, anger clouding all good reason. I desperately want to smack that smirk off his face.

He gestures to his ale, which he barely touched. “I didn’t like this one. Could I get one of those local Connecticut ales you mentioned?”

I stare at his glass of ale. I want to throw it in his face and watch his shock as it drips down his beard, fancy sport coat, and dress shirt.

He chuckles. “That’s an evil look in your eye, Cindy. You’re thinking about dumping this drink on my head, aren’t you?”

How did he know? “Not at all,” I lie.

He leans close and smirks. “I dare you.”

Driving Him For Christmas

Author : Dean Cornwall

Number of pages : 108

Publication date : December 21st 2020

Collection : /

Publisher : Independently Published

Synopsis
Photographer’s model Drew Angel is no pushover. He’s been hurt more times than he can count by men that see him as nothing more than the pretty face on the other side of their lens.

So when his drunken cab driver runs into the back of a beaten-up old Porsche on the way to the station, he tries to ignore the attractive other driver’s attentions. He knows men like Simeon King, and he knows better than to succumb to their superficial charms. Even when he learns the truth, that Simeon’s father recently passed away and the car was his only real legacy, Drew keeps an arm’s length between them.

But Drew Angel has a Christmas tradition: he and his sister give out gifts at the children’s home where they grew up before they found their forever family.

He has to get home for the big day. And when the trains are all cancelled because of the weather, how can he possibly turn down the offer of a ride?

My Review
I wanted to read this title because I was looking for a reading not too long to pass the time during my two days of digestive problem which forced me to stay in bed. Wonderful way to end 2020 and start 2021...
I prefer slow burns in romances but here, the characters are well constructed because we discover their pasts so it bothered me less. The evolution of the characters' personalities and their relationship is also interesting to follow.
The story is made of chance, encounters and decisions that change the future of Simeon and Drew. A pretty hot little story because it includes a few detailed sex scenes.
Overall, the text is easy to understand. I just dealt with a few words that I didn't know. This is probably because the author is British and I'm more used to read American English.
Rating : 4,2/5

[Review] Atlantis Institute For Dangerous Criminals #1 ~ Imprisoned Heir by River Starr

Technical sheet

AIFDC1 COVER
Atlantis Institute
For Dangerous Criminals
Book 1 : Imprisoned Heir

Author : River Starr

Number of pages : 304

Publication date : July 1st 2020

Collection : /

Publisher : Independant Publishing

Synopsis
We’re the most dangerous criminals…

They call me Nyx. Under the cover of night, I used to steal from the rich to give to the supernaturals at the bottom of the chain, and to earn enough money to find a cure for my sister’s death curse.

After an… accident we’ll call it, I ended up with a one-way ticket to the sea fae’s top prison: Atlantis. Not the lost city, but the inescapable penitentiary beneath the sea fae court. The Atlantis Institute For Dangerous Criminals is where the vilest supernatural prisoners are kept. Assassins. Murderers. Treasonists. And the three supernaturals sentenced with me are the most ruthless of the worst. Dax, the dark, enticing vampire whose gaze is too intimate for a total stranger; Titus, the fiery dragon shifter with an anger problem; and Frost, the winter fae with a chilly personality to match her ice-blue eyes.

But to escape and survive, we’ll have to work together despite our differences…

We may not get along, but we’re all we have to survive and escape Atlantis Prison. It won’t be easy. Someone thinks I’m a criminal—but I have no memory of committing the murder, and it wasn’t amnesia…

It was the other soul inside of me.

My Review
I must have something with the prisons and the fae. This is already the second book I read with these themes.
We reinvent Atlantis in an underwater prison with faes, vampires and shifters.
It's interesting to see Nyx trying to get away with Eos' actions. It's annoying at the same time because I got the impression that it only leads to more problems.
The blow of the predestined mate is like a smirk of fate.
I struggled to get into the story at first but as I progressed through the narrative I got hooked more and more. I wanted to find out what was going to happen next.
The end leaves us with answers but new questions arise. I want to read the rest while being afraid at the same time. Long live the paradoxes.

My Review
The beautiful cover immediately caught my eye. It is one of my favorites from September to December 2020.
The synopsis made me want to read this prequel. We discover a little this world where there are shifters. I like dragons shifters
.It was too short. We don't have time to get to know the characters well. I want more because there are already several questions that I ask myself. I wait impatiently for book one.

[Review] The Djinn Wars #1 ~ Chosen by Christine Pope

The Djinn Wars

Number of pages : 382

Publication date : February 4th 2015

Publisher : Dark Valentine Press

Synopsis
When a fatal fever nearly wipes out the entire world's population, the survivors of what became known as "the Dying" believe the worst is in the past. Little do they know…

In the aftermath of the Dying, survivor Jessica Monroe searches for sanctuary in a world unlike any she's ever known before. As fear and isolation envelop her, Jessica encounters the sensitive and helpful Jace, who she believes is another survivor. But Jace has a past and secrets of his own that's he not ready to disclose.

Soon Jessica realizes that the destruction of humanity might actually be the first step in a larger, more complicated plan -- a plan that may very well involve her. Struggling to discover her role in a terrifying new world where everything has changed, she must decide who she can trust. But is the price for that trust just too high?

My Review
What attracted me to this title is the theme and the fact that Djinns are involved. You might think I've been a bit of crazy considering the world news for this year. I admit that I had a bit of a nightmare the first night because I have a very scientific mind which tried to make sense of it all.
This is the first time that I read a story with Djinns. I did not find any in French. This is one of the reasons I am happy to read in English. I have a lot more choice of reading by adding the French and English books.
We begin the story in a world identical to ours but what happens afterwards radically changed the planet which is rid of the majority of humans following an epidemic of fever.
We live the change with Jessica, we are sad with her. Even though I know this is just a fiction it is sobering and I thought a lot about my family and what my reaction would be to the same.
The pace is quite quiet, the pages are linked easily without problem of comprehension. There was only one moment when I got a little bored: in chapters 15 and 16.
I intend to continue this series because there is still a lot to discover. I just hope there will be a little more action.
With this book, I discovered Christine Pope. She already has several books and series to her credit. Many are attracting me so many are already joining my wish-list.

As soon as the pen hit the paper (or fingertips to the iPhone), she couldn’t stop. It was kind of like one of those fire hydrants, spewing copious amounts of water all over the place. The characters and their stories just flowed out of her. She is honored to be the scribe, getting to share her friends’ stories. You can read all about her gifted friends in the Orion’s Order series (Book 1 is Calypso’s Heart).

On a personal note, M.C. Solaris is actually the pseudonym of Marina Schroeder, women’s health enthusiast and lover of all things paranormal romance (PNR) and happily ever after (HEA). Excerpt
“Is everything okay?”

“Yeah,” he said, unsure where that question was coming from.

“I can feel otherwise but I won’t push.”

He cursed under his breath. Of course she could feel his lethal mood and the emotional storm he had been trying to keep at bay regarding the whole fucked-up Cecille situation. He set all of that aside and focused fully on Keena. Lately, she was the only thing that was helping to get his mind off the past.

“It’s just our case,” he added in a tone that was clear he wasn’t going to say anything else.

She nodded. “Understood. I’m here if you want to talk.”

“What if I don’t want to talk?” he drawled, pressing in close to her and sliding his hand to the nape of her neck.

Her lips parted at the close contact. Suddenly, all she could feel was the heated desire between them. He leaned down and claimed her mouth in a slow, smoldering kiss that took her breath away. “Rhyker.” Her voice was a little breathy.

“Yeah?” He playfully nipped at her lower lip.

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she went in for the kiss and it was anything but slow. She slid her tongue against his and, suddenly, she had her legs wrapped around him with her back pressed up against the wall. He broke the kiss only to move his mouth to her neck. Her hands drifted through his thick and silky black strands as she moaned. The sensual sensations of his tongue on her neck and his body against hers shot through her body and straight to the apex of her thighs.

“Wait,” she managed to get out with just barely more than an exhalation of air. She knew that if she didn’t stop this soon then she wouldn’t have the strength to stop this from going any further. She wanted it to go further—a lot further, but she also wanted to take things slow.

He immediately halted and looked at her in a way that let her know she was in complete control of how far this went.

She could see the fiery desire in his now glowing, piercing blue eyes. “I want us to take this slow.”

His smirk was sinful. “We can go as slow as you’d like, Fire Gem.” His tongue made the slowest ascent from the curve of her neck all the way to her ear where it flicked her soft little lobe.

She shuddered.

“Is that slow enough for you?” he teased on a rough whisper.

She somehow managed to nod.

He repeated the motion. “I could lick you all day.” He smiled in satisfaction at the involuntary sound caught in the back of her throat. He slowly kissed his way back to her soft mouth and sucked on her bottom lip.

Using the last of his reserves, which were severely lacking when it came to this female, he allowed just enough space between them so she could slide down the length of his body until her feet were back on the ground. The friction and crackling desire pulsing between them had them sucking in heavy breaths.

Publisher : Pride Publishing

Synopsis
Successful CEO Kennedy Grey thought he had his life planned out nicely until he hires supposedly straight Kieran West as this year's vacation companion.

For the past five years, CEO Kennedy Grey has advertised for a gay male holiday companion to join him on his annual vacation. Although Kennedy claims to be neutral in his choice, he has certain non-negotiable requirements. Applicants must be between 21 and 25, non-smoking, social drinkers, either versatile or passive, and be able to pull off the role of dutiful boyfriend in front of his clutch of gay friends. What does the candidate get out of the deal? An all-expenses-paid vacation and five grand in cash at the end of the vacation—more if the candidate exceeds his expectations—a safe enough addendum because for the past three years no none ever has.

Kieran West sits in a quiet corner of the coffee shop, trying to finish an assignment. At 29, he is single once again. By now he should have settled down. But when his girlfriend of three years gives him an ultimatum – ring or road – he chooses the road. Worst of all, he had no qualms about doing so. As for his finances? Saddled with a string of outstanding student loans, he is struggling to finish his masters while also supporting his brother through college. Losing his work at the estate agent could not have come at a worse time. And then he overhears the man at a nearby table recruiting for a job that pays a cool five grand. What does he have to lose?

My Review
The synopsis of this title was in my inbox. This is how I discovered it and wanted to read it.
I'm a fan of MM romance and well-constructed, no-rush stories. In this book, I have everything I ask for.
The characters are well constructed, we discover their pasts, how they arrived at this precise moment and not just two sentences. The relationship grows slowly. Awareness too. I enjoyed seeing this development.
We are entitled to the point of views of Kennedy and Kieran. It allows us to see the thought flow of both.
The author's pen is fluid and I had no difficulty in understanding (French girl remember).

Synopsis
LORENZO
I had it all.
A wonderful family with a loving wife who was my world and a beautiful baby girl.
I didn’t need anything more to be rich in my eyes.
Then one day, everything changed and my world was ripped apart.
My wife, my everything, was taken from me, and I was left alone to raise our baby girl.
I was forced from late night sessions at the gym to changing diapers all by myself.
Thank God for the help I received from my parents and siblings or I would have been lost.
I accepted my fate of being alone with my baby girl and living life with just us two…
Until the day I met her, and she became everything worth fighting for.

CARISSA
Life was so perfect.
A loving fiancé, wonderful friends and family, and a job I adored.
Until one day, my world was turned upside down and the man I loved threw the promise of forever down the drain and walked out of my life.
The day he walked out of my door, I knew that everything I had ever grown up to believe in was a lie.
Love is unconditional but love sure as hell doesn’t last forever.
The vow to love me for the rest of our lives ended quickly as he pulled away from me, and buried himself in the arms of his ex.
I was left alone, cursing the male species and everyone who had found their happily ever after.
My sister and my best friend were the only ones there for me…
Until the day I met him, and he became everything worth fighting for.

My Review
If you followed me during the Book Blitz, you must already know that I liked the synopsis of this title and that I wanted to read it. It is finally done in several times during breaks from work.
We begin the story in a sad and overwhelming way. Usually these passages are mentioned but not highlighted by other authors. I almost believe that the loss of a loved one is taboo. Bella Emy approaches it in a natural way.
We discover all the characters little by little. Lorenzo and Carissa have one thing in common: a painful past. The evolution of their relationship is slow.
The story is pleasant, there is a good rhythm where only the end seemed abrupt to me. Some explanations and hop it's resolved and hop it's already the end.
I do not know yet if I will continue the series. Not for lack of desire, but I still have a ton of books to read. In short : we'll see later.
