[Book Blitz & Giveaway] Night Watch by Annie Anderson

Technical sheet

Blitz Night Watch
Soul Reader
Book 1 : Night Watch

Author : Annie Anderson

Number of pages : 190

Publication date : November 17th 2020

Genres:  Adult, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

Waking up at the foot of your own grave is no picnic… especially when you can’t remember how you got there.

Cursed with powers she can’t name, Sloane Cabot has vowed to catch the Rogue who turned her into a monster and killed her family. Too bad a broodingly hot mage is bound to keep her on the straight and narrow.

Whether she likes it or not…

Annie Anderson is a military wife and United States Air Force veteran. Originally from Dallas, Texas, she is a southern girl at heart, but has lived all over the US and abroad. As soon as the military stops moving her family around, she'll settle on a state, but for now she enjoys being a nomad with her husband, two daughters, an old man of a dog, and a young pup that makes life... interesting.

Excerpt 1
“Thomas warned me about this, you know,” Bastian began, his voice pitched low, his booted feet striding close but not piercing my bubble.

I kept my gaze latched onto his feet and refused to look up. If I caught sight of his neck, of his blood pulsing in that lovely vein, I’d lose it. I wasn’t hungry yet and I wanted to keep it that way.

I cleared my throat, an action that took far too much effort and hurt for some reason. My throat was dry. Why was it so dry? “Warned you about what?”

“He said that, in time, I would want to be bitten. That the thought of you hungry or in pain would make me want to serve myself up so you didn’t suffer. That it was dangerous and blissful and would likely cause you to leave us.”

His feet moved closer, piercing my bubble. The heat of him washed over me, even though he was a few feet away.

I shook my head, which I instantly regretted because blood loss was a thing and I was losing a lot of it, the healing process taking far too long. Booth must have hit an artery.

“I don’t want to be tied to anyone. I don’t want a home. I don’t want friends.” It was a lie—a whole mountain of lies—but it was the truth, too. I didn’t want a tie to someone who was going to leave me. I didn’t want a home if I was going to lose it. I didn’t want friends that would die on me.

“Too bad.”

Excerpt 2
Coming to in the middle of a cemetery was never high on my bucket list—not that I had a bucket list at twenty-two—but if I had one at all, hanging out in a graveyard wasn’t ever going to be on it.

Of all the things that woke me up, it was the grainy yet damp sensation of dirt on my hands.

Not the rain pelting me. Not the lash of wind chilling me to the bone. Not the fact that I was outside when I should be warm in my bed. No, those kernels of awareness came later. It was those simple granules of earth on my fingertips.

Aching and groggy, it took a full minute to understand that I was, A—outside, and B—in the middle of a cemetery. At night. In a damp, nearly see-through nightgown that had never once graced my wardrobe.

Seemed legit.

Honestly, if I weren’t in so much pain—if my gut wasn’t roiling with hunger and my head wasn’t feeling like someone had taken a pickax to it, I could’ve sworn I was dreaming. Well, not dreaming exactly. Having a nightmare would be more like it. I mean, why else would I be covered in dirt, sitting on the freshly dug mound of a grave?

It took a hell of a lot of concentration to read the headstone, but I wasn’t at all surprised to read my own name: Sloane Emerson Cabot, with my birth and death date right underneath it.

As nightmares went, this was pretty solid. Too bad I had the sneaking suspicion I was in no way dreaming.

We got to Brookfield Zoo around ten, and even though I had forty dollars in my purse, Cole insisted on paying for the both of us. We entered through an underground tunnel that led to the main entrance. Images of ostriches and lions watched us pass as we followed the crowd to the turnstiles.

Cole handed a heavyset guy in a blue uniform our tickets and then held his hand in front of him. “Ladies first.”

“Thanks.” I tucked my hair behind my ear and asked, “Are you sure your friends won’t mind me tagging along?”

During the drive over, I envisioned Cole’s friends as a group of unruly demons. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t asked him what to expect when he first mentioned getting out of the apartment. When I voiced my concerns to Cole, he let out a loud guffaw. A minute later, he assured me there wouldn’t be a demon in the bunch, except for us. He also told me that Luz was psyched to meet me. She was tired of being the only girl in the group.

Cole and I headed toward a large water fountain at the center of the zoo. A boy wearing a lion sun visor held his little hands up as if they were paws and roared. His sister—who was about half his size—screamed. I couldn’t help but laugh. Then I remembered Cole’s comment back at the apartment.

“Are you really a fan of leopards?” I asked.

“Snow leopards,” he corrected. “They’re smaller than other wild cats, but they’re graceful, cunning, and exceptional survivors.”

I got the feeling he related to them on a personal level. Cole had said incubi were low on Hell’s totem pole of bad asses.

“What’s your favorite animal?” he asked.

I tapped a finger to my lips. “Hmm—”

He jumped in front of me, walking backward with a bounce in his step. “Don’t tell me. I’ll guess.”

I giggled. Cole’s behavior was so human it was hard to believe he was a demon. But then again, so was I.

“You’ll never guess.”

He tipped his head to the side. “Is that a challenge?”

“Maybe,” I replied with a smile.

He slowed, avoiding bumping into a stroller even though his back was to it.

“How’d you know they were there?” I whispered, fully expecting to be told that demons had the radar-like senses of a shark.

“Reflection in your sunglasses.” He wiggled the ones he wore.

Darn on the supernatural radar, or lack thereof.

“Where were we?” he asked.

“You were about to admit there is no way you’ll guess my favorite animal.”

“You think so.” Cole smirked. “Let’s make it interesting…winner sleeps in the bed tonight, his choice if he wants to share.”

“Or hers, and just so you know, I’m not sleeping in the same bed as you.”

“You did last night.”

“I was passed out due to being drugged. It doesn’t count.”

I hadn’t given much thought to the fact that Cole and I shared everything in a one-bedroom apartment. “Does the couch pull out into a sofa bed?”

“Nope. I usually don’t have company sleep over. I discovered last night you’re a cover hog.”

Since most mornings I woke tangled in the sheet, I knew better than to argue with the latter statement. “Don’t you have girls over?”

“Definitely not. Except Luz, but she’s a friend and doesn’t stay the night.” His expression became serious. “No bringing work home. House rule.”

I didn’t plan on hooking up with anyone, so that rule was fine by me. “Deal.”

His lips curved upward into a devilish smirk. “Which one: you won’t bring strange guys home, or you’re willing to risk losing dibs on the comfy mattress?”

I began to think Lilith had purposely paired me with Cole as a way to add to my own personal Hell. He was seriously charming and—had we been human—the type of guy I went for.

But he’s not human, and the only reason you find him charming is because he’s the only person you’re still allowed to talk to.

Even Gregory Davis—the geeky brain from school with thick black glasses and a never-ending supply of sweater vests—would look appealing when you’re staring down eternity and he’s the only person you know.

I shook my head to clear my runaway thoughts and replied with confidence, “Both.”

“Be prepared to lose.” He turned and fell in stride with me. In a low voice, he said, “Luz, Nick, and Dylan are human. Hunter’s something else.”

I stopped. “What’s Hunter?”

It had to be Mason COVER
Beachbreak High
Book 1 : It had to be Mason

Author : Emily Lowry

Number of pages : 206

Publication date : October 25th 2020

Collection : /

Publisher : Eleventh Avenue Publishing

Ask your brother’s best friend nicely, and he’ll teach you how to date. He might even teach you how to kiss…

Zoe Walsh is the most awkward girl in Beachbreak High. For years, she’s admired her crush from afar, but she’s NEVER talked to him. What would she even say? She doesn’t know the first thing about boys, or dating. The only thing she really knows is dancing.

Mason McClellan is the charming, all-star quarterback who gets all the girls. He’s also Zoe’s brother’s best friend. This year, he plans to take the hottest girl in school to Homecoming. But she refuses to be his date unless he can dance. Sadly, Mason has two left feet.

When Zoe approaches Mason for dating advice, he cuts her a deal: if she teaches him how to dance, he’ll teach her how to date. Lessons include how to get your crush to notice you, how to get asked on a date, and how to kiss.

The last thing they expect is to fall for each other. But as Homecoming draws near, Zoe wonders – if dating Mason is just practice, how come it feels so much like the real thing?

My Review
It was first the title of the book that intrigued me and then the summary made me want to read it.
The main theme is regularly used in books (the brother's best friend) but for the moment, I don't feel tired because I don't read them often.
The characters are fun to follow. I have a preference for Zoe because I find her character a little more in-depth than Mason.
The story is beautiful, without headach, reads easily and has done me a lot of good in this troubled period.
I plan to follow this series because I want to know more about some characters that I have noticed.
Emily Lowry also wrote "Rumors and Lies at Evermore High Series".
Rating : 4/5

Worth the Wait

Author : Charity West

Number of pages : 428

Publication date : November 10th 2020

Genres: Adult, Romance

Gemma Rhodes has her entire life ahead of her. At eighteen, she should be at college, living life to the fullest. Except she doesn’t have her life even the slightest bit figured out. Instead, she’s taken the year off to learn who she is and what she wants – aside from the unattainable Jake Bennet. Her brother’s best friend, her knight in shining armor, and a man who thinks of her as a little sister. She knows she should move on, but how can she when no one could ever compare to Jake?

Jake Bennet might be half a world away in the middle of a war, but the Marine only has one thing on his mind – Gemma. The one woman he can never have. There were some rules a guy just didn’t break, and dating his best friend’s sister was one of them. Riley would break him if he caught Jake looking at Gemma like the lovesick fool he was. When he’s injured and sent home, he knows he should stay away, but sometimes temptation is just too much for a mere mortal to handle.

There’s only one thing Jake needs to know… Can Gemma love a broken Marine? Because she’s had his heart for years, and if he’s learned anything, it’s that some things are worth the wait.

Charity West is a young adult/new adult romance author who has always had her head in the clouds. She had her first crush when she was four, and it lasted for six years. Then she quickly fell head over heels for another boy, until she had to move away and leave him behind. Jumping from one boy to another, she finally found a keeper when she was twenty, and she’s been married to him ever since.

By the time Charity was twelve, she was sneaking her mother’s Harlequin romances and reading them in secret when she was supposed to be asleep. Teased throughout middle school and high school for the bodice ripper covers on the books she openly read in class, she knew that one day she wanted to write her own happily-ever-afters.

Jake Bennet reclined on his bunk, his booted feet crossed at the ankles, one hand behind his head. The picture on his phone wasn’t new by any means, but it was no less enthralling. He’d had a thing for Gemma Rhodes for as long as he’d remembered, not that he’d ever admitted it to anyone other than his mother. If his best friend, Riley, knew that Jake was crushing on Riley’s younger sister, there would be hell to pay. Although, after he’d offered to pay for half her car two years ago, he’d wondered if his friend might have an idea. It had cleaned out his savings account at the time, but it had been worth it.

He smiled a little as he stared at the picture and wished he could be there with her now. Even though she was still in high school, after everything he’d been through, nothing would keep him from her side. Her smile was bright enough to light up any room, and her eyes were bewitching. He’d wanted to ask her to his senior prom, but then the school had passed a rule that only seniors could attend. Jake had fought the ruling, but in the end, he’d lost and had to take a fellow classmate.

The way Gemma had chased after her brother and him had always been cute, even if her brother had never thought so. But sometime around Gemma’s fifteenth birthday, Jake had realized that she was growing into a rather stunning young lady, one that he wouldn’t mind dating. As he’d watched Riley chase off all of Gemma’s would-be boyfriends, he’d known that he didn’t stand a chance, not until he’d proven himself worthy. When Riley had talked about joining the Marines, Jake had thought he’d finally found a way to prove he wasn’t a screw-up, but someone who Gemma could depend on when things got tough. Not a boy chasing after dreams, but a man who could provide for her and offer her a real future.

And now he was stuck in Afghanistan, fighting for…hell, he wasn’t even sure what they were fighting for, and he doubted any of his fellow Marines knew either. It was hotter than the lowest level of hell, and every time he inhaled, he swore he breathed in more sand than air. He’d joined the Marines with thoughts of being a hero and defending his country, and now he realized that in this war, there was no such thing as a hero. Every man here followed orders the same as everyone else. Some had medals from previous battles and acts of bravery, but if you asked those men if they were heroes, every last one would tell you no.

His phone vibrated then flickered out, and he cursed the low battery. Shoving to his feet, he decided to check his email and see if there was any news from home, but on his way, he passed Riley. His best friend looked deathly pale, and like he might puke at any moment. Unease settled in Jake’s belly. He didn’t know what had caused Riley such pain, but he knew it wasn’t good, and since Riley only had two living relatives, something had to have happened to either his dad or his sister. Just the thought of anything bad happening to Gemma was enough to make him feel a little green himself.

“What’s up, Riley? Bad news from home?” Jake asked.

“It’s Gemma. Dad said she went to the store the other night, and someone crashed into her car. She went down the embankment and into the gorge off Brierview Road.” Riley lifted his gaze. “It’s bad, man. Dad sent the email yesterday and said Gemma hadn’t woken yet. She has a broken wrist and stitches in her head where she bashed it against the window and steering wheel. They aren’t sure when she’ll regain consciousness.”

Jake had to lock his knees to remain upright. There was a roaring in his ears and tightness in his chest.

“I want to ask for leave to go home and be with her, but Dad told me my duty was first to our country, and I had a job to finish. He’s right. I know he’s right, but it tears me apart thinking of her lying there hurt, and I’m way the fuck over here unable to do a damn thing.” Riley shook his head. “This is seriously fucked up.”

Jake couldn’t argue the point since he felt the same. The worst part was that he didn’t even have a right to ask for leave to check on Gemma. They weren’t dating, or engaged. If they were older and married, he’d take off in a heartbeat to be with her, but he knew that was just a dream for many years down the road. If Riley wasn’t going to let him date Gemma, big brother sure as hell wasn’t going to let him marry her. Hell, he was only nineteen and shouldn’t even be thinking such thoughts, but when he saw Gemma, he saw forever.

He just hoped he’d get the chance to tell her that someday.

My Review
I discovered this book thanks to another book from the same publisher, "The Magic Ingredient" by Lindy Miller, and which I was looking into their website and their future releases.
It'is the summary that made me want to read this title. We can guess that there is a fantastic side to the story, but I was completely taken by surprise by the way we discover it.
The characters are interesting, pleasant to follow or even surprising. Although we suspect some things given their behavior, the end surprised me. I didn't see it coming.
I was able to enrich my vocabulary with a few new words and I find that reading in English is getting easier and easier.
It's a beautiful end-of-year story, a bit like the Christmas TV movies that I love every year. This is why this year, I made a little personal challenge to read six books on the Christmas theme.
Alexandrea Weis also wrote "Sisters of the Moon" which tempts me well, but also other titles.
Rating : 9,5/10

Welcome to Hellbound High, where the students carry weapons and the bullies bite … hard.

I never wanted to go to this stupid school. I had a life before coming here. A Pack. People who cared about me. But all of that is torn away when my mother dies, my boyfriend cheats on me, and my very human father rips me away from the only life I’ve ever known.

I thought my life couldn’t get much worse, but Hellbound High is about to prove me wrong. Just by showing up, I’ve caught the attention of the local Alpha’s son. Goody.

He’s arrogant, stubborn, and used to getting what he wants. Sometimes that’s to get into my pants. Sometimes it’s to make my life hell. He runs hot one minute and cold the next, leaving my head spinning.

But I have bigger problems than the school’s resident hot werewolf. I’m a lone wolf in a new town, which means I have a big red target on my back.

With no Pack, no friends, and no protection, I’m about to find out just how bad things can really get...

Teaser - 1 I’m itching to touch her and it’s doing things to my head I don’t like. My wolf is agitated and I’ve never been so close to losing control of him the way I am now.

Teaser - 2 It’s all so confusing. I barely know Rafael Castillo, and what I do know paints him as an arrogant wolf that thinks much too highly of himself. I shouldn’t be here with him. I shouldn’t let him hold me like this. But I am and no matter how many times I tell myself I need to leave, I stay.

Teaser – 3 I can feel the anger radiating off Rafael in front of me. His eyes are narrowed, burning silver, his hands clenched into white knuckled fists at his sides, but he doesn’t say anything. He just stares Zheng down behind me like he can kill him with just a look. It’s the stare of an emerging Alpha and even I’m having a hard time standing in the face of it.

“He’s bad news, vanilla. You can’t trust him. He has no loyalty. So if I were you, I’d stay away,” Jordy says.

I suck in a breath. Loyalty is everything to a wolf. It’s how bonds are forged. To claim a shapeshifter has none is like saying he has no value.

I’m instantly angry on Zheng’s behalf. He’s been nothing but nice to me. Went out of his way in fact to be kind, something no one else at this school has bothered doing.

“He’s a shifter. Why would you say something like that?”

He shrugs giving no further explanation.

“Do what you’re told and stay away from him,” Rafael’s voice is guttural growl.

“I don’t take orders from you.”

Excerpt : Powers
My blood began to boil... except the bubbling felt more like a tingling. Didn't he have any compassion for what he was doing to Jace and I? The angry current coursed through my veins. So charged, I felt a need to defuse. I threw my hands in the air and screamed.

"Mariah-," Mum began but stopped.

Dramatically, the sky lit up like a stormy backdrop to my anger. Lightning pitched down from the sky and hit the lorry, cutting the engine out. The black cloud moved in to darken the before clear sky. The first plop of rain sent a chill through my cotton t-shirt. In no time, the sky was emptying buckets of rain.

"Temper, temper," Jace teased.

"Quick!" Mum yelled over the rumbling sky as it began to chuck it down, "Everyone inside."

We ran in. Denny invited the removal men to take shelter in our home with the promise of sampling their famous Sparkle Cakes and a brew.

As Jace and I were about to run up the stairs, Mum pulled me to one side.

"Are you okay, Mariah?"

"What do you think?" I snapped at her stupid question.

She tugged on my sleeve. "You must stay in control of your emotions."

I shrugged her off me and hurried up the stairs with Jace.  In my room, we revelled in the storm's blessing of extra time together. I grinned, pleased with myself as if I had caused the storm.

Excerpt : Magic (Ana)
I sighed. “I’m trying to avoid Murray.”

“Are you really?” Ana said in an over-inquisitive way that told me she knew more than I thought.

“What do you think you know?” I asked as my eyebrows raised.

Ana’s face lit up. “I heard Murray’s taking you to the dance.”

“That’s what he thinks, but I’m not going.”

“Why not? He’s hot.”

I rolled my eyes. “And super arrogant.”

Ana shrugged. “It’s confidence.”

“Are you on his side or mine? Plus, Mum warned me to stay away from him and the pool.”

I blushed, realising I’d said too much. Now Ana would think I’m crazy when I explain about Mum's visions.

“So? What does it matter what your mum says? She can’t stop you.”

Ana didn’t get why I was taking Mum’s warning seriously. She hadn’t seen her magic or the way her predictions came true.

“She’s a psychic. She wouldn’t have warned me unless something bad is going to happen. I mustn’t let him kiss me.” I blushed deeper as soon as the words came out of my mouth.

Ana squealed. “Your mum had a vision of you making out?”

“Ana, please. And, she could stop me. She’s a frigging witch.”

“Does she cast spells?” Ana’s eyes widened.

“Sometimes.” I wish I could shut up.

“Hold up! Do you cast spells? Like a witch -like a wizard - like Harry fucking Potter? Oh my god, that’s so cool!”

“Ana, keep your voice down!”

Ana bit her lip to suppress her excitement. “Can you teach me magic?”

My Review
>>Review originally published in French in January 2019 when I started to read in English<<
As you can see, I started reading in English. Which is much easier than I imagined, past the first two pages. I don't spend more time reading in English than in French.
I preferred to start with a free book to be sure of my choice. It's Paranormal Romance so I'm on familiar ground even though vampires here are a little different from what I've read in other books.
I liked Zoe very much even if at the beginning I found her too easily influenced. Especially by her sister. And not very thoughtful about her actions. It is only afterwards that her rises in my esteem.
Rowan's behavior didn't shock me because I'm a bit jaded about vampires who want to end their lives.
The story is quite fluid. I didn't know a few words but it didn't really bother me. It all comes together well with hardly any downtime.
This little appetizer made me want to continue the series, to discover new characters and to learn more about these vampires.

Sometimes the road ahead twists in unexpected ways.

Adelita's new life was supposed to be easier, now that she left the village. But the normal life she craved doesn't last for long. The Kalku won't stop until they have her in their clutches, making any sort of freedom impossible.

While escape seems like the best option, Adelita knows that the time is coming for her to stand and fight for the family that found her...

...and the family she didn't know she had.

My Review
I wanted to read this title so much that I almost chained book two and three, except that I realized that it was not necessarily easy for my little French head. From now on, I will always read another book between two books of the same series.
The story start about a week after the end of the previous volume. There is always this succession of quiet moments full of hugs with more eventful scenes.
The author offers us new surprises and a scenario not very predictable except for the end which did not really surprise me.
The characters are still pleasant to follow and Cruz begins to appear more sympathetic to me (it almost pains me to admit it). The relationship between the characters evolves. Do we go to a trio or something else? No idea but for the moment I totally agree.
I continue my adventure with this series. It's rare that I'm so enthusiastic after several books.
